An innovative partnership between the University of Maryland College Park Foundation and the Community Foundation of the National Capital Region, the UMD Community Donor Fund is a way for individuals and families to give to local charities and help make their community a stronger, healthier, and more vibrant place to live.
The UMD Community Donor Fund is a donor advised fund (DAF) that offers individuals the flexibility of a private foundation without the high cost and investment requirements. By creating a DAF, you are eligible for an immediate charitable tax deduction for the full fund amount—while allowing you to distribute the funds at a later time to charities of your choosing.
Who is Eligible to Open a Fund?
Any individual wishing to support UMD and other local charities. Funds have a minimum initial contribution of $10,000.
Giving through the UMD Community Donor Fund might be especially beneficial to you if you anticipate a higher-than-usual tax year due to a windfall, sale of a business, or other highly taxable event, because your tax deduction is realized immediately.
How It Works
You make a tax-deductible gift of $10,000 or more to a UMD Community Donor Fund now, and later advise how you would like the money to be donated. Contributions can be made with cash, appreciated stocks, or other assets. Additional contributions of any amount can be made at any time. You can even make a legacy gift to your fund in your will and designate someone to serve as the fund advisor.

The University of Maryland is proud to partner with the Community Foundation of the National Capital Region (CFNCR). All UMD Community Donor Funds are held and managed by CFNCR. CFNCR is part of a network of some 700 community foundations nationwide, each a tax-exempt, public charity made up of charitable giving funds established by individuals, families, corporations, and other organizations. The Community Foundation, established in 1973, is the largest funder of nonprofits in the greater Washington region.
